Every time I’m in ‘Murica, chicken and waffles crosses my mind. It’s the definitive American comfort food in my opinion and I have cravings for it all the time. During my last visit to New York City, I had a fair share of chicken and waffles, but Root & Bone FTW! Run by Top Chef contestants Chef Jeff McInnis and Chef de Cuisine Janine Booth, Root and Bone is a new restaurant in New York City focusing on Southern, rural American cooking.
Hailing from Florida, Jeff has earned three James Beard nominations over the last two years while working at Gigi in Miami where he met his partner, Janine Booth. Fellow top chef contender, Australian Chef Janine was eliminated mid-competition, but had a good run destroying chefs in “Last Chance Kitchen.” Both Chefs have since moved from Miami settling in New York City diverting all their attention to their restaurant, Root & Bone.
Located in New York’s Lower East Side, the restaurant is a casual neighborhood restaurant celebrating Southern fare and country comforts; a roots revival of timeless Southern recipes & traditions with a strong focus on soul nurturing, farm-fresh ingredients. Some of the things you’ll find on the menu include cornbread, biscuits, fried chicken and waffles, watermelon salad, meatloaf, drunken devilled eggs and carrot cake. Everything that we ordered was executed perfectly, but the fried chicken was unreal and one of the best things I ate in 2014 – juicy, crispy and finger lickin’ good.
Grandma Daisy’s Angel Biscuits ($6 USD). The biscuits were moist and buttery with fresh thyme and toasted benne seed-sea salt served alongside honey roasted chicken jus.
Drunken Devilled Eggs ($6 USD). The yolks were creamy and velvety piped into the pink pickled egg whites topped with pickled roots and thin crispy chips.
Chilled Watermelon ($7 USD). Loved the refreshing chilled watermelon served with cucumber basil and a citrus vinaigrette.
Grilled Sweet Corn Cob ($8 USD). Can’t really go wrong with corn, especially when its slathered in whipped buttermilk cream butter, hominy and popped corn.
Sprouting Garden Salad ($11 USD). This colorful delicious salad consisted of butter lettuce, root chips, avocado, radish, apples and strips of cucumber served with a lemonade vinaigrette.
Crispy Free-Range Bucket of Bird (half of a chicken $18 USD). The fried chicken is incredible, brined in sweet tea, then fried and lemon dusted. The fried chicken is served with spiked Tabasco honey and whiskey maple syrup. I doused my chicken in this stuff, so good!
For an additional $7 USD, the fried chicken comes with a side of crispy buckwheat waffles smothered in melted cheddar.
We ended our meal with a legit carrot cake.
